Earlier this year the NHS celebrated their 70th Birthday. To help bring history to life members of The Landing eGenius were asked to develop the NHS at 70: The Story of Our Lives website. eGenius create platforms and content for learning and for knowledge sharing.
The University of Manchester that leads the initiative wanted to engage the public in the project so eGenius developed a website using the Drupal content management system that had 3 distinct functions:
● To promote the project to the public with stories about the NHS and individuals in it and influenced by it
● To be a comprehensive and high capacity online digital archive
● Provide a facility for members of the public to upload and share their NHS memorabilia: images; videos; documents etc.
The NHSat70 project was funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund and incorporated existing archives held by the University of Manchester and other organisations that are being digitised. In addition, the project involved gathering oral histories of people and the NHS. These stories combined with the existing digital archive and new items contributed by the public give the team at Manchester University the unique opportunity to combine images video and sound to create stories and exhibitions such as this Timeline of the NHS and stories of Black and Minority Ethnic staff who worked in the NHS.
The NHS at 70 project is largely supported by volunteers who had long experience of the NHS. As part of the development eGenius invited a selection of older volunteers to the UX Labs at The Landing, for market research and testing of the new website as they wanted to create an interface that was easy to use.
The user Experience Labs at The Landing are a specialist facility for software, website or application developers to test the usability of their content with the consumer. The Labs helped eGenius understand what would work for the NHS at 70 users.
